FOUNDER STORY .
Growing up in Haiti, Mikerlande Poliard Adelson knows firsthand how many, unfortunately, struggle with deprivation of food, clean running water, lack of infrastructure and education. From a young age into adulthood, helping others has always been in her heart.
In 2017, she traveled to Marsh Harbour, Bahamas for her church’s women empowerment group’s 12th annual “Women of Compassion Conference.” Seeing how residents lived helped propel Mikerlande’s passion for making a change. There, she decided to put her mission in action.
The following year, she went back to the Bahamas -- this time on her own. In the months leading up to the trip, she collected school supplies and hygienic products to help residents of Hope Town, a small district on the Abaco Islands. Just a few months later, her mission took her to La Romana in the Dominican Republic -- where she also supplied residents with basic necessities. She also got the chance to visit one of the many Bateys -- or shanty-town camps -- where Haitian descendants live and work in deplorable conditions. Day in and out, residents there work in sugar cane plantations for little pay.
Mikerlande also supports a school and church in her native land of Haiti. She not only helps provide food, clothing, school supplies to the island of Tortuga, but she also works to empower women and men by teaching trade.
Through her non-profit organization “Elevate Them” -- founded in 2018 -- Mikerlande hopes to make a difference in the life of others and reach out to even more people, and places, in the years to come.
